The customers at the Majestic Theater in Silver Spring burst into applause at the end of Angelina Jolie's performance on the opening night of her new film Maleficent. Her performance was outstanding from the moment she flew onto the screen until the closing credits. Few actors have worn horns or played an evil, wicked, revengeful witch with the charm and utter delight that Jolie brought to the role.
She said that playing the role gave her the chance to have fun. If the definition of success is doing what you love Jolie is the most successful actor in Hollywood. She carried the Disney production with the power of her superior skill and experience and still made the audience suspend disbelief to witness a women who could fly.
The themes of hatred, jealousy, envy, and revenge flowed throughout the film and were woven together seamlessly by Jolie's brilliant performance. Waiting 16 years to get revenge against the man who destroyed her only chance at a loving relationship was a powerful lesson in how revenge poisons the soul and destroys innocent people in order to satisfy an evil thirst to achieve satisfaction for a previous injury.
The Majestic Theater is one of the DC areas finest movie houses and was well suited for the sound effects that came with a film that gave customers total satisfaction without blood, gore, or profanity. The audience consisted of very young children and senior citizens. The only blood in the entire film came from a single drop when the spell cast by Jolie's character achieves the promised effect.
Making a film in 2014 that is family oriented and entertaining to audiences who are accustom to large skill carnage and massive explosions is a major achievement for Jolie who also served as the executive producer of the film. As a mother of six children Jolie wanted to make a movie suitable for her own children as well as for mothers and fathers around the world. She played her role well and gave customers the service that they paid their money to see.
The lesson that Jolie taught through the film is a very important message. Destroying a young woman's life to seek revenge for what someone did years before is pure evil.
