Before you read on this urban legend is gruesome and if you're a little squeamish please don't read on! The urban legend, "The Licked Hand," deals with privacy being invaded and the feeling that everything is okay but it's not really. So read on and you'll see the different variations of the legends and a little bit about how it all started.
A woman is home alone with only her dog to protect her. While the woman is listening to the radio she hears that a serial killer is on the loose, so she locks all her doors and goes to bed. After awhile she hears a dripping sound, she's afraid but never does leave her bed. She hides underneath her covers and is reassured after her dog licks her hand. The woman falls asleep since she was reassured that her dog will protect her.
The next morning she wakes up and on her bedroom wall the words, "Humans Can Lick Too," are scribbled with her own dogs blood!
This time a young girl is home alone with her dog. This has the same presence of the last story, the girl is reassured by her dog after hearing creepy noises but the next morning things are not what they same to be. The young girl goes into her bathroom after hearing dripping sounds and peeks in there, what she sees is disturbing, her dog is murdered in the shower, hanging on the shower head and the words, "Humans Can Lick Too."
This variation has a old woman but with the same things that happen to her, she finds her dog dead in the living the room with blood dripping from the ceiling. The ending line of this story asks the reader, "So what was licking her hand?"
The licked hand has it's origins dating back in 1870s England but without the gruesome storyline. The story goes a man was sleeping and what he thought was his dog licking him was actually a robber stealing his jewelry.
This is indeed a gruesome story that makes us feel like we aren't really alone. There is someone always lurking in the shadows and nothing can protect our own privacy. So that's what, "The Licked Hand," is all about.
