Easily one of the toughest divisions in the W-League, it doesn't take much pushing to get excited about the W-League's Southeast Division. It starts with the war-like rivalry between the Charlotte Lady Eagles and Atlantic Silverbacks, who have battled over the division crown since Atlanta joined the league six years ago. One could easily assume that nothing would change in 2012, as the Silverbacks have held the division crown for the last five years... or will the new editions throw a monkey wrench into those plans?
There has been a complete re-aligning for 2012, as Dayton Dutch Lions, Virginia Beach Piranhas, Fredericksburg Impact and Northern Virginia Majestics have all been shifted north to compete in the Northeast Division. This only leaves the two butting rivals as the veterans of the division. But out with the old and in with the new as we see three new teams come in VSI Tampa Flames, FC Jax Destroyers and the Central SC Cobras.
With so many new teams there are a lot of questions that will be answered in 2012. What will these new teams bring? Will we see the same old same with the veteran Lady Eagles and Silverbacks battling it out for the top spot? Or will new stars emerge to dethrone the defending W-League Champion (Silverbacks) and the it's top contender?
There is little known at this point on the new teams. FC Jax Destroyers is under the same umbrella as the men's team, which also goes by the same name, which was founded in '11. And the VSI Tampa Flames and Central SC Cobras seem to be a mystery. A detective would be needed to track down anything outside of tryouts for the VSI Tampa Flames. And the Central SC Cobras have no affiliations to any men's team so they are sure to be a surprise as well (which may be by design). My scouts are out as I speak.... err type.
The season will kick off Friday, May 11 as VSI Tampa Flames visit the Charlotte Lady Eagles.
Season tickets are currently on sale as the schedule was just release. Save your sick days for traveling, like you needed an excuse to leave early on a Friday, as there are some great women's games set to take place.
There are a lot of questions, and we will soon to have the answers as the countdown to kick off for the W-League and the Southeast division is nearly underway.
