A little something for everyone - Places to check out in DC

The DC area is aloft with activities and great places to check out in the summertime. DC natives often take for granted the array of cultural and epicurean possibilities in our city. Here are some places that you should check out if you find yourself with a free afternoon or evening to fill.

For the adventurous:

If you haven't been to Chinatown lately, you might be unaware of the trapeze rig set up in the parking lot at the intersection of 9th and H St. NW. Trapeze School New York offers two hour flying trapeze classes for up to ten people starting at $40 per person (with a one time $20 registration fee for your first class). They also are offering a Silk Trapeze Class in late September, so that you can learn to the types of tricks rarely seen outside of a Cirque du Soleil performance. These courses are good way to have a little fun while improving and expanding your dexterity.

For the broke and hungry:

If you are a fan of good food, The Amsterdam Falafel Shop is a solid bet for a quick, cheap and delicious sandwich. Anyone can make falafel, being fundamentally comprised of chickpeas, deep fried and tossed in a pita. That is not what distinguishes this shop from other places. The toppings bar is what makes this place special. Boasting over 20 toppings and sauces, you get to personalize your falafel so that it satisfies both your hunger and your taste buds.

Keep in mind, this is a cash only establishment, so come prepared. Also, you are only allowed one trip to the toppings bar. No double dipping allowed so be sure to get all the toppings in on that first stop.

For the chocolate addict:

Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury Confections, located in the 1500 block of 14th St. is a great place to quash a serious chocolate craving. Rather than merely doling out sweets, this shop serves as a mini art gallery, a confection shop and a cocoa bar. Artfully The cocoa bar serves innovative cocoas infused with non-typical ingredients like dried wasabi, donning the names of famous actresses and divas. They also offer catering for special occasions and chocolate classes for those who want to do more than just pop in for a chocolate nightcap or dessert.

For the Superhero movie fanatic:

Every Monday night, CrystalCity is screening free movies. Located at 18th and

Bell St.
, across from the Crystal City Metro, you can take a load off and unwind after a long day. The movies are free and begin at sundown. Grab a snack or meal at one of the many local restaurants or bring your own picnic. The next movie showing is “The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” and the following Monday, they begin screening the Batman series.

Feel free to check out the rest of the screening schedule and the local dining options available in the area. Bring a nice blanket to plop down on and good company to cuddle up with.

These are just a few ideas of things to do around the DC area before the summer passes you by. New discoveries and upcoming events will be posted periodically. Be sure to check back for updates regularly.
