This weekend will mark the annual kickoff of the Bavarian Icefest in Leavenworth, from Saturday, the 18th through Sunday, featuring a snow sculpture competition, dog sledding, and a slew of other activities. Besides the many good restaurants and other food opportunities, there is reportedly a chili cook off. And (as if the beautiful lights were not enough) fireworks are also planned.

Pretty much there is something for everyone in Leavenworth as well as nearby Cashmere and other areas. Besides skiing and winter activities there are the many shops and art works. With a growing reputation for excellence some 14 wineries and tasting rooms can be found in the area; six in Leavenworth.

And there are a number of antique stores in the vicinity as well, ranging from small to large to huge. The Aplets and Cotlets candy factory is also in nearby Cashmere, about 15 minutes away. The store portion of the factory has special offerings and free tours of the factory are available.

Driving distance from Seattle can range from 134 to 173 miles, depending on the route taken, whether Snoqualmie or Stevens Pass and road conditions. A day trip of several hours driving each way may seem a bit much and accommodations may be preferable. Or, there is an Alki day trip being offered through Amazon, Alki Tours Deal - Pick a city: Amazon Local.
