Miramar, FL – Local students and audience members are the playwrights of the hilarious and interactive sketch comedy musicals performed by Story Pirates on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center | ArtsPark in a presentation sponsored by Waste Pro.
Whether it is a world where cats can fly or a rock opera about fuzzy alien tickle monsters, this sketch comedy musical is based entirely on the funniest stories created by children nationwide, as well as from at least one student in attendance. Every performance is unique as teaching artists and actors also take suggestions from the audience to create improvisational stories.
The New York Post wrote "Only a kid could write a story like 'The Do-Do Bird and the Dead People' - but only the Story Pirates could stage it, complete with puppets, 'Thriller'-esque dancing zombies and funny lyrics that have children (and adults) begging for more..."
Students at New Renaissance and Glades Middle Schools will attend workshops with Story Pirates prior to the show where they will learn writing fundamentals and the elements of storytelling in a fun and innovative way by writing about and acting out topics they care about.
As seen on The Today Show, Story Pirates celebrate the words and ideas of young people and is dually based in New York and Los Angeles. By pairing world-class teachers with first-rate actors and comedians, the troupe offers a variety of tools to make learning more engaging and effective. Story Pirates’ acclaimed programs and professional development services for teachers have been implemented at more than 200 schools nationwide.
Comedian Jon Stewart from The Daily Show said “The Story Pirates teach kids a love of creative writing. It helps kids to see that their words and ideas are really important. I believe that what the Story Pirates are doing is helping America, nay, humanity - helping humanity itself. It’s crazy entertaining.” Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets are available at 954-602-4500 or select your seat online at www.miramarculturalcenter.org. Box office fees will apply.
