A home floor product designed with DIYers in mind

Home and Living is always ears open for new developments that enable homeowners to update or renovate with the most attractive products, in an easy manner. That’s why when we heard about SnapStone we thought you might enjoy this interview with Jonathan McIntosh, President & CEO of CoMc (makers of SnapStone).

Q.: For Home and Living Readers who don’t know—what is SnapStone?

J.: SnapStone® is an innovative porcelain tile floating flooring system that’s designed for the D-I-Yer to easily and quickly install a genuine tile floor without the need for adhesives or complicated materials. It installs directly over most hard flooring surfaces.

Q.: Is this application for a homeowner DIY project? How difficult is it to install?

J.: Yes, it is designed specifically for the DIYer. The system installs directly over most hard flooring surfaces, so there’s no need to rip out existing flooring. Just place, snap and click… then grout using the system’s pre-mixed urethane-based flexible grout. Even DIY’ers who have never installed tile before can achieve professional results.

" Even DIY’ers who have never installed tile before can achieve professional results."

Q.: What can you tell us about the color of SnapStone?

J.: Currently SnapStone comes in two color collections. The first collection features 11 colors available in two sizes (6x6 and 12x12) and the 2nd collection features 5 colors available in 18 x 18. However, the collections are complementary and the tile is modular, so the tiles can be mixed and matched to create a look and pattern to show the personality of the homeowner.

Q.: Do the tile sizes vary?

J.: SnapStone Interlocking tiles come in 3 size formats: 6” x 6”; 12” x 12” and 18” x 18”

Q.: What are some of the SnapStone product features?

J.: The SnapStone interlocking tile system features:

Genuine, high-quality 10mm porcelain tile. Porcelain tile is more durable and longer lasting than ceramic tile.

Patented SnapSys Interloc® tray permanently adhered to the back of the tile featuring interlocking tabs that ensure a level floor with no lippage caused by uneven tile and perfectly aligned ¼” grout lines. The tray also has a sound-deadening rubberized plastic grid that eliminates the need for additional underlayment.

Urethane-based flexible grout – that allows the floor to “flex” as needed with normal the expansion and contraction of the structure. The grout comes pre-mixed, so color is consistent from bucket to bucket. It is also self-sealing, stain- and crack-resistant, so there’s no need for additional costly grout sealers.

Q.: What type of floor prep is necessary?

J.: To lay a SnapStone interlocking tile floor, the flooring surface must be clean, smooth and within tolerance of ¼” over 10 ft. and 1/16” over 1 ft. (as defined by the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook for Ceramic Tile installation). In many cases, SnapStone can be installed directly over the existing hard-surface flooring such as vinyl, hardwood or even existing tile.

Q.: Is there anything else you would like Home and Living Readers to know?

J.: SnapStone is a good value not only because of its high quality tile and beautiful appearance, but because it is easy to install with just a few basic tools that cost less than $100. Homeowners, who have never installed flooring before, can easily install a new floor in almost any room in their home generally in 1 day.
