A Haunted Weekend with the longest cat in the world

Fans of felines will find that Sacramento is the place to be this weekend, when Jazzy Cats presents “A Haunted Weekend” at Cal Expo. The event features a 12-ring cat show, kittens and cats for adoption from local rescue groups and great shopping opportunities.

A special guest to the show, which runs both Saturday and Sunday, is a world-renowned fellow that goes by the nickname “Stewie”. While that name may remind some of the evil animated toddler on a popular television show, this Stewie is notably more elegant.

His official name is Mymains Stewart Gilligan, which goes a long way towards explaining why he goes by a simpler and shorter nickname. Stewie is a handsome silvery Maine Coon cat that has won the Guinness World Record for the World’s Longest Cat.

When in a full stretch, Stewie is 48-1/2 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. This puts him in the average standing height range of a 6-year-old child.

Jazzy Cats is a local club affiliated with The International Cat Association(TICA), which recognizes 55 breeds of purebred cats for competitions.  But TICA is also the world’s largest registry of household cats, allowing former feral cats, strays and shelter cats to compete just like pedigreed felines can.

There are more than 200 cats entered in the show this weekend, including house cats and many pure breeds of felines such as Savannahs, Selkirk Rex, Bengals and Ragdolls. Their owners will be part of a cage decorating contest with a Halloween theme, which will carry over into the rest of the hall.

Vendors will be present selling all matter of pet supplies and goodies for pets and their animal-loving people.

Local rescue groups including Cats about Town Society, Happy Tails and HART will have kittens and cats available for adoption at the event, as well at fun items for sale. All proceeds go directly to support the rescue efforts of the groups.

The C.A.T.S. booth will also offer low cost flea kits containing Frontline+ or Advantage 2 for cats and dogs. The kits cost $15.00 and provide up to10 doses for cats and up to 7 doses for dogs up to 22 pounds. The same kits offer flea protection for larger dogs; the number of doses depends upon the weight of the animal.

There is a printable coupon for $2.00 off the ticket price by clicking on their website here.  Cal Expo charges a parking fee for $10.00 per car, so carpooling with other pet lovers is a good idea.

As past attendees can attest, Jazzy Cats cat shows are not at all stuffy or pretentious. The atmosphere is fun and festive and there are always friendly owners who are happy to talk about their beloved show cats. And with the holidays fast approaching, the show is a perfect opportunity to find something unique for the pet-lovers in your life.
