As you walk to the mailbox at the end of your driveway to retrieve your mail, a momentary sadness which you hastily allowed to pass came over you. All the mail consisted of was your utility bill and some advertisements. You thought wouldn’t it be nice to receive a simple hand written letter from a friend. Of course, you had to admit you had fallen prey to today’s technology and had not written a personal letter in years.
The internet has definitely brought the world closer. The fast pace is amazing. It is becoming more advanced even as you are writing this article on your HP 2211x desk top. As a retired baby boomer, you are trying to keep up with the rapid pace of modern technology. Nevertheless, sometimes you reminisce about the good old days. In your opinion, feeling the excitement that goes with receiving an unexpected letter from a friend far outweighs, emails, Facebook, twitter and other social networks.
You recalled how you had several pen pal friends during your high school years. What a delight it was to receive a letter from them. Sometimes you exchanged photos. Unfortunately, so much time has elapsed. You can’t recall their names and have no clue what happen to the letters. If you did, with today’s technology you might be able to locate them. That’s an interesting thought.
On the other hand, you contemplate surprising a current close friend with a hand written letter. However, you only have her email address. Her phone number is private which means no address listing in the phone book. It is amazing to you that many individuals only have cell phones and no land based phones. It seems hand held phones are beginning to replace lap top and desk top computers and TV sets. You just know the Dick Tracy wrist band devices are closer than we could ever imagine.
The irony is that if you are to execute your somewhat antiquated action of letter writing to a friend, you will need to search the web to find your friend’s address. You are contemplating just sending her an e-mail to obtain the information since you want it ASAP. You are also seriously considering buying a smartphone which you will order online. It will be nice to look forward to receiving it by mail.
