Summer is winding down, but it’s still plenty warm enough to enjoy a tall cold glass of lemonade. With that being the case, isn’t it a lovely coincidence that August 20 is National Lemonade Day? And as another coincidence, TheBeerLady happens to have a perfect recipe for the grown-ups to celebrate the day.
Oh, sure, there are probably dozens of lemonade cocktails. Throw in the ‘regular’ recipes that could be adult-ified with a splash or two of your favorite spirit, and the options could very well number in the hundreds. But how many recipes are not only lemonade, but a way to use some of that over-abundance of cucumbers from your garden, and give you an excuse to break out that bottle of Hendrick’s?
Not every home bar brags of hosting a bottle of Hendrick’s Gin, but perhaps it should. For most Americans, hearing the word ‘gin’ brings to mind the traditional London Dry Gin, and probably in a tall glass with some tonic water and a lime wedge or two. Hendrick’s, however, is not a traditional gin. It’s different from start to finish, although the distilling process is a story for another day. No, today it’s all about flavor.
Oh, sure, you’ll recognize it as gin, but the flavor profile is decidedly different from, say, Bombay or Tanquaray. And very, very different from whatever off-brand happens to be cluttering up the well at the corner bar. Hendrick’s Gin won’t beat you about the head and shoulders with a juniper branch. Instead, it caresses you gently with a bouquet of soft botanicals that includes Bulgarian rose and cucumber. Forget complicated cocktails with dozens of obscure ingredients – Hendrick’s just begged to be sipped in a deliciously simple cocktail that can let its flavors shine through.
And now it’s time for that recipe.
Hendrick’s Cucumber & Lemonade
- 1 ½ oz. Hendrick’s Gin
- 4 ½ oz. cucumber puree
- 3 oz. fresh lemon juice
- 4 oz. simple syrup
Combine all ingredients in a shaker and shake well. Pour into a tall glass over ice, and serve garnished with cucumber.
