A glimpse into the CW's 'The Carrie Diaries'

The Carrie Diaries is one of the CW’s new midseason shows. It airs Monday nights at 7, starting this Monday, the 14th. After watching the not-for-review pilot, courtesy of the CW, here are some spoiler free thoughts on the show.

The year is 1984 and Carrie Bradshaw is a junior in high school who gets her break out of the suburbs through an internship at a law firm. The Carrie Diaries will follow Carrie as she tries to balance her high school life with her new, exciting life in Manhattan where her new friends don’t quite know that Carrie is still in high school. Gossip Girl fans will most likely be able to help fill the void left by their favorite Upper East siders with Carrie and her friends.

Speaking of her friends, they each have something going on in their lives that could prove to be interesting. It's great to watch the scenes where Carrie is with her high school friends, and so the question really is whether or not her friends are entertaining when they are off on their own getting into trouble. So far Carrie has really only made one friend in Manhattan: Larissa. She is quite the character, and it is hard not to fall in love with her. The writers have set up a lot of possible side storylines, and so the trick will be seeing how well they can juggle all of them.

Since the show is called The Carrie Diaries, it is not shocking to learn that Carrie does a lot of narration. Most of the time it is cute and it adds a good bit to the story, but occasionally it comes off as too over dramatic. For instance, she refers to a taxi cab as a “golden chariot.” Carrie’s voice overs are definitely a key part of the show, and may help draw people in or possibly turn people off.
