I rode the elevator the other day at the hospital. I was there to visit a cousin of mine. On the elevator, I rode up with an older couple and who appeared to be their granddaughter. Excitedly she pushed the button, and you could see a smile crack on her face as we were riding up, a real genuine one. The girl was a sweet little child probably about 4 years old with porcelain skin and strawberry blonde hair. As the elevator came to its final stop at their floor, she just broke out in the biggest smile ever, a face of sheer awe as if we had just arrived at the gates of Disney Land, or she had just experienced the most fabulous moment ever, and started laughing. Wow I thought, and said as I smiled to her guardians who smiled back at me “Do you remember when life was that simple? How great” I said. They agreed. We wished each other a nice day, and I was reminded not to take things for granted. Simple things even like escalators, and elevators, fountains in the park, and books….
A thing I love about books and as a writer I have many, is their ability to transform you to another time and place. You can go on another experience by almost stepping into someone else’s lives, by way of the characters. If the writer has “done their job” so to speak they will impress upon you something… a thought, a vision, a creation, a disagreement even, and broadened way of thinking…. Or perhaps they just teach you your ABC’S. For a child in a challenging home environment, a book can transform them to another world! Introduce them to new friends, hopes, dreams, knowledge, adventure!
That’s what I am asking you to open your hearts and share for some more #HolidayGiving tonight my beautiful friends.
