My neice's class recently sent a character named "Flat Amanda," their spinnoff of "Flat Stanley" in an envolope. My task is to take Amanda to areas in the Bay and photo her. Then, send the photos with some brochures back to Wisconsin. This is a fun way that students can learn about other places using characters from books that they are reading.
Time is always such an issue in the classroom. If you ask a teacher what would be his/her biggest wish, you would often hear the answer: More Time! We spend so much of the day teaching the basics, Math and Literacy, that often subjects like Geography fall to the wayside. Also with cuts in funding, teachers often have to be responsible for instructing "Specials" like Art, Music, and even Physical Education. So, teachers are finding ways to teach more than one subject at one time.
The good news is they are finding creative and engaging ways to do it! Go Teachers!
