Who says you have to leave South Bend to get involved in the movie-making business?

Who cares!

Mid America Filmmakers and Downtown South Bend will be presenting the second annual River Bend Film Festival at the Century Center from Friday, April 30 to Saturday, May 1.

The River Bend Film Festival is a diversified event that includes short film segments under the block of family friendly, experimental, local, horror, ecology, gay and lesbian, Asian, and documentary. One of the film segments, Granger Community Church is one of the many chapels featured in the local documentary The Alpha and the Mega.

This two day event will showcase 70 independent films from professionals and students. The screenings are organized with workshop segments. These segments include Film Makeup Effects by Andrew Swisher, Lighting and Camera for Video by Joel Langston and Lynn King. The keynote speaker Lloyd Kaufman best known for his movie The Toxic Avenger will also present his own workshop, Make Your Own Damn Movie Mini Master Class followed with a Q&A session.

Saturday night’s screening will contain material for a mature audience.

“We have something for everyone to enjoy, all kinds of genres and a family friendly block Saturday afternoon,” said Festival Director, Tim Richardson. “I want people to know this is not a festival just for filmmakers, it is here for everyone in the community to enjoy.”

For a full list of film segments visit the official River Bend Film Festival website.

A total of 130 entries were received by the River Bend Film Festival committee. The film submissions are rated on technical and artistic styles. Because of the abundant entries, a pre-kick-off to the actual Friday premier of the film festival will be held Thursday at Indiana University South Bend from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Wiekamp Hall, Room 1001. The IU South Bend screening is free to the public. Ticket sales for Friday and Saturday’s exposition will be available at Thursday’s screening.

The actual cost for the film festival is $10 an evening or afternoon.  Saturday morning offers a more affordable rate for families.  A weekend pass is also available for Friday 7 a.m. to Saturday at midnight.   Weekend passes are $30 and $25 for students or seniors.

The River Bend Film Festival allows professional and aspiring filmmakers, screenwriters, and actors the opportunity to network.  Overall, the festival entertains, informs, and educates the public about the art of film making.

“We really need everyone’s support and new ideas to help the fest continue to grow,” Richardson said. “There’s nothing at all like this anywhere [in South Bend].”
