A Few Ways to Celebrate Women's History Month

Today is International Women’s Day and we are still just getting into March, which is National Women’s History Month. The Washington DC area is steeped in history and while all history is women’s history, there is nothing wrong with focusing on the specific role women play in shaping cultures around the world. Here are a few places to visit this month to get more information on the stories of women past and present.

*Visit the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site. This site served as McLeod Bethune's residence and as the  headquarters for the National Council of Negro Women. It is now the home of the National Archived for Black Women's History

*Visit the Clara Barton National Historic Site. Barton's Glen Echo residence was once the headquarters (and warehouse!) for the American Red Cross, which she founded.

*See My Name Is Kahentiiosta, which screens daily (except Wednesday) at the National Museum of the American Indian. This 30 minute film gives one Mohawk woman’s perspective on her identity.

*Check out the Rhythm Café: Women in Jazz on March 13, 2 pm,  at the Smithsonian's Anacostia Museum. Karine Chapdelain of the Howard University Jazz Ensemble will discuss women in jazz and the work of Brazilian singer Simone Bittencourt. Call 202.633.4866 to register for this event.

*Test your knowledge on March 23, 6:30 pm at the Kogod Courtyard during the National Portrait Gallery Pop Quiz: Women’s History Month Challenge. This multimedia game is inspired by the museum's collection and is suitable for patrons ages 18 and up.
