A family resolution for 2013

It's the first day of a new year. As tradition goes, it is also a time to start fresh and set goals, or resolutions, for the new year. People all over are vowing to eat better, get out of debt, spend more time on favorite hobbies, or kick bad habits. Well, how about a resolution that can benefit the entire family?

Starting a gratitude journal is the perfect way to start the new year. To get started, just grab a notebook or journal. Then, choose a fifferent colored pen or pencil for each member of the family. They will use the same color for each entry to identify themselves. Finally, sit down and talk about how a gratitude journal works.

Each member of the family writes down one thing that they are thankful for each day. This can be as huge as "family" or as simple as "perfectly cooked pasta". The point is for everyone to focus on one great thing about their day. Even the worst day has a silver lining, and focusing on the good instead of the bad, can really lift your spirits.

As an added bonus, think about how much fun it will be to look back and reflect on your year together. A gratitude journal is a clever way to document and capture the events your year.

So, if you are up for a new kind of resoution, one that will make your cup half full, grab a journal and get started. Happy New Year!
