The first Toyota Texas Bass Classic was held at Lake Fork in 2007. Through the years it has been at different locations, but this 8th annual contest was once again at Lake Fork this May 9-11. Called the ‘crown jewel’ of the fisheries in all Texas waters, Lake Fork was the site of a fishing tournament that highlights fishery management and conservation as promoted by the Professional Anglers Association and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Fisheries Division. A field of 50 of the top anglers from around the world competed for cash and prizes. All fish caught were weighed, recorded, then released back into the lake.
In addition to the competition, there were many vendors offering games and giveaways. There was a children’s area where kids could take the Outdoor Kids Challenge and practice casting, identify different animals by their skins and tracks, create ‘fishy’ art, and learn more about outdoor fun. Also on the schedule were daily concerts featuring Pat Green, Little Big Town and Justin Moore. And competition was not confined to fishing; the BBQ contest, with brisket, ribs and chicken categories, had mouths watering all over the area!
A great weekend for family fun, there was something for everyone. I am looking forward to next year’s Toyota Texas Bass Classic!
