A.F.I. at Denver's Magness Arena: "Not So Silent Night"

Sunday night, A.F.I. (a.k.a. "A Fire Inside") headlined a night of modern rock at "Not So Silent Night", hosted by local Denver radio station Channel 93.3.  University of Denver's Magness Arena was at about  half-capacity for the four-band showcase.

I Fight Dragons launched the evening at about 6:00 PM.  With a distinct video gamer theme, this band's claim to fame is that they incorporate game controllers as musical instruments.  Honestly, it comes off as a gimmick that doesn't work well--little more than a novelty attention-grabber tactic. Not much musical substance to back it up.

Next on the lineup, and the surprise of the evening, was southern California's Say Anything.  Coming out in uniform black pants and white shirts--"We dress like Mormons", the lead singer quipped--their semi-geek image actually worked for them. Fun songs, well-played, with a gracious attitude.  Well done, boys.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus was next on the list, and were the evening's most disappointing act. The lead vocalist was by far the band's weakest link, consistently pitchy and unable to deliver the vocal power found in their recordings. Add to that an arrogance and self-importance well beyond their status--and closing their set with an indulgent 12-minute song that just wouldn't end--and you were ready for a break.

That said, when AFI finally hit the stage, they delivered--big time.  Their near-flawless, high-energy performance lit a fire inside while the snow fell outside.  Strong vocals, tight instruments, great stage presence--one of the strongest shows I've seen in some time.  The only disappointment (if you could call it that) was that they closed the show without an encore.

Overall, Not So Silent Night was fun entertainment for the local alt-rock fans who braved the cold to be there. Band by band, however, AFI alone carried the show and made the ticket price worth paying.
