Continuing Coverage: Pacquiao vs Mayweather:
In a recent interview ( Video >> ), world-renowned trainer Teddy Atlas claimed that the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather, Jr bout is a "done deal."
Boxing historian, and Ring Magazine founder, Bert Sugar also stated "it's already made" during the same event.
Before the Miguel Cotto fight on November 14th, a Filipino journalist claimed that the principals involved ( Pacquiao and Mayweather, Jr) have already agreed to a fight behind closed doors, and that, not too many people outside the inner circles of both camps are aware of the early agreement. This claim seems plausible.
Both camps want the fight. That there is an initial agreement appears to be the most likely case. Confirmation by way of press conference would then be a ceremonial and marketing tool, and a celebration that all details have received sign off.
Will Manny effectively block Floyd's laser jabs?
If this is true, then Golden Boy Promotions ( representing Floyd ) and Top Rank ( representing Manny ) are:
- hammering out details, not principles
- finalizing the bidding process on venue (with Las Vegas being the front-runner)
- and simply waiting for an opportunistic and market-friendly time to stage an impressive announcement.
The Thanksgiving holidays would be too early. The venue bidding process still needs to play out. Compliance and fund-sourcing also need to be finalized. The Christmas holiday season is a bad time to make a promotional announcement. The public is distracted. Many Americans will be traveling and shopping, and a boxing match will not be at the forefront of priorities during this calendar window.
When Pacquiao vs Mayweather will be announced
Look for an announcement sometime in January, before the Super Bowl. In the meanwhile, gimmicks and hype such as trash talk may occasionally crop up. But the fight will happen. We suspect that it is a matter of when that announcement has the most positive and effective marketing results. The holiday season is about love and family - not a time for a brutal and dangerous sport. When the consuming public prepares for the Super Bowl, it is once again readying its appetite for savagery.

These companies have a chance to pull an uptick in top line revenue under bad economic conditions. And a sagging local economy has casinos hurt and local politicians under pressure. Re-election coffers are at stake, and the casinos will supply a bite of the steak if the politicians can bring in the cattle. Pacquiao vs. Mayweather is one big Bevo. "Money" Mayweather, local officials need election donations too.
