A dog day: Pillar Point coastal hike and seaside eats (Photos)

Pillar Point Harbor, located on the northern edge of Half Moon Bay, is probably best known for Maverick’s—the winter destination for elite big wave surfers and the surf site that claimed the life of legendary pro surfer, Mark Foo.

But if 55-degree water and jagged rocks aren’t your style, Pillar Point also offers coastal hiking trails that are dog friendly.

The ocean-hugging trails overlook elephant seals basking in the sun and hundreds of creature-filled tide pools. (Unfortunately, the beach is off limits to dogs.) In the afternoons and on weekends, the trails are pleasantly busy with amiable dogs and owners looking to play—or maybe just stare at the vista from one of the many strategically placed benches along the path.

After about a mile the trail meets a paved road, Ocean Blvd. If you are in the mood to celebrate the scenery with some grub or a beer, follow the street for a few blocks and you will run into the Moss Beach Distillery. Fantastically fresh seafood, a seaside patio that allows dogs, and an intriguing tale of the “Blue Lady” ghost make this restaurant the perfect place to sip Pillar Point Pale Ale and slurp oysters by the fire pit with your satisfied pooch.
