A different kind of farmers market

Los Angeles is brimming with farmers markets, but one farmers market will offer what others cannot: The California Heritage Market, held by West Coast Collective dispensary, will be offering fresh medical marijuana.

The L.A. Times reports June 27 that this market, located in Boyle Heights, will be the first to hit the L.A. scene. The California Heritage Market will be held inside the West Coast Collective building, and will offer patrons what other farmers markets offer -- better access to growers. "Dispensaries are supposed to allow patients to access their growers," said Paizley Bradbury, executive director of the West Coast Collective, to the L.A. Times.

The idea for this market came when Bradbury saw that some other dispensaries had wrong information on products along with remarkably higher prices. This market will allow patients to communicate directly with the grower, and receive a better price on goods. "We are offering a new type of way for patients in Los Angeles to access their medicine,” Bradbury said.

According to L.A. Weekly there will be about 50 vendors onsite which include growers and other dispensaries, among others. But, not just anyone will be able to make purchases at this market. Only those who can legally buy medical marijuana will be allowed to enter. They will determine whether or not you are able to buy legally by calling the visitors’ doctors, checking IDs, and running the presented licenses through California’s medical marijuana program database.

Although the city’s attorney's office could not be reached, LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera told the L.A. Times there seems to be no laws being broken as long as vendors at the event only sell to licensed buyers. Farmers markets of this sort are not unfamiliar. Markets such as the Northwest Cannabis Market in Seattle, Washington, have been open since 2011.

At this the California Heritage Market you may also be able to find goods such as marijuana edibles, oils, concentrated cannabis, and glass pipes. The market will be held July 4-6 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at West Coast Collective dispensary at 1500 Esperanza Street.
