A devastating end for severely burned dog in Illinois

Early Sunday morning, the severely burned pit bull who was discovered alongside a roadway in Monee, Ill., passed away.

The dog's name was Petunia, or fondly, "Mama Petunia," following the delivery of her puppies - a miraculous event which took place just one day after she was found and rescued.

At 5:15 a.m. this morning, Mama Petunia's heart stopped beating.

Though veterinarians tried to revive her, it was not meant to be. The dog who had survived too much trauma was tired - her body spent and unable to go on.

Since her discovery, the injured dog was the responsibility of It's a Pittie Rescue, and she remained under constant veterinary care for her massive injuries.

The five puppies that she delivered just over a week ago are reported to be doing well.

This morning, messages of heartache and condolences are being shared on the Facebook page created in her honor. The nearly 9,000 fans of the dog are devastated with this morning's terrible news.
