Memory as defined by the Encarta dictionary means the ability to retain knowledge. It sounds so formal and simple but the reality of a memory can be extremely powerful and debilitating.
Holding onto memories can sooth pain in the short-term but if you’re not careful, this band-aid can be detrimental to your future growth.
The purpose of this article is not to steal precious memories from you but to offer information that helps you make sure you’re processing memories in the healthiest of ways.
Yes, you need to process them. You live them, feel them and then release the energy that ties you to them. No, this doesn’t mean you can’t reflect upon a past encounter and surface an emotion, it just means you shouldn’t allow a memory to imprison you into the past.
It is human nature to hold on to the happiest moments and to attempt to numb oneself from the painful ones. Or, perhaps as time passes your recollection becomes a less severe version of the experience as an attempt to soften the negative impact.
If you fear thinking about some dark secret or experience layered deep within, find the strength to surface and face it. This will take away its hold on you and once your able to feel and process its impact, the obstacle that has held you back, unconsciously, will dissolve.
It is healthy to reminisce about the fun times with friends and honor a remembrance of a loved one but just be sure these moments are released in the aftermath to allow you to continue in the present and look to a brighter future!
