Hurricane Shoals Park is 27 miles north of Athens, Ga. It is a beautiful park that features something for the whole family to enjoy as a day trip. The Hurricane Shoals Park is located in Maysville, Ga. right off of highway 82. The park is open on the weekends in March from 10-6 p.m. In April they are open daily from 10-8 p.m. and after Labor Day are open 9-9 p.m.
The park is very family friendly and has a lot of picnic tables and grills available to enjoy a cookout. You can enjoy the small hiking trails, children can play at the playground, dad can play some miniature golf and mom can enjoy sunbathing by the water.
If you are a photographer or enjoy taking pictures be sure to bring your cameras because there is a lot to photograph. You may want to bring a bag of popcorn for the ducks because they are not bashful and will come very close to you just to get a treat.
During the summer the park offers a lot of different special attractions. Every year they have a festival called Art in the Park. At the festival they have all kinds of activities for the children and many craftsmen displaying their work. They always have a running race in the morning, food concession stands and so much more.
You will step back in time when you walk in the historical village. You can actually walk into most of the buildings and explore life the way it was long ago. There is an old church, court house, several log cabins, a blacksmith shed and corn crib and so many other buildings. All of these structures were saved and moved to this location. A few of the structures were donated to the park. Each building has a small plaque by the entrance explaining who donated it and a little background history. There is also the Hurricane Shoals Covered Bridge in the park that has been renovated.
You could spend the whole day at the park and never run out of anything to do. The admission to the park is free. They do allow pets or alcoholic beverages on the premises.
