A day in the other Las Vegas

Unknown to many the historic town of Las Vegas, New Mexico holds a trove of experiences awaiting the curious traveler. Although it may lack the lights and glitter of the other Las Vegas, this sleepy town offers an array of traditional New Mexican food, beautiful scenery, and unique shopping, all just a short drive from southern California.

Spend a day getting to know the other Las Vegas.

8:00am- Try a breakfast burrito and sample fresh torrtillas at Charlie’s Spic and Span. While ordering the waitress will ask New Mexico’s State Question: Red or green? Translation: What kind of chile would like to smoother your plate? (Yes, smoother.) If you are of the weak of tongue you might want to ask for mild chile.

9:00am- Take the 10 minute drive up to Montezuma to see the historic Montezuma Castle, now home to the Unites World College of the American West. Tours are offered about twice a month, see their website for details. While there be sure to take a dip in the natural Hot Springs, use of the springs is free and they are operational most days of the year.

12:00pm – Head back into town for a tasty lunch at Dick’s Liquor and Deli and eat where the locals dine. They have an array of soups, salads, and sandwiches made with a local twist.

1:00pm- Just a few blocks away you can tour the Railroad Avenue Historic District, where Doc Holiday once owned a saloon and one of the famed Fred Harvey’s hotels still stands.

While exploring  the district you will be sure to find that perfect something gladdened by history at Rough Rider Antiques, specializing in vintage and antique items from over 20 unique dealers.

3:00pm- Spend the rest of your afternoon perusing the unique shops of the Plaza. When you are in need of a break stop by the parlor of Plaza Drugs for an ice cream or old fashioned soda.

5:00pm- Wonder into El Rialto on the plaza for a traditional dinner. With a wide array of combination plates they take the stress of out sampling the local fare. Be sure to finish your meal with a warm sopapilla and honey.

6:00pm- Pull up a seat and have a cold one next to the ghost of a cowboy at Byron T’s Saloon located in the historic Plaza Hotel.

Although the population is small this little town has plenty of sights and new experiences awaiting you.
