In my on-going series called “A Day in the Life of:” I will feature young adults who have amazing careers working behind the scene for some of the most accomplished politicians, athletes and actors in America.
When I first met Mather Martin, my initial thought about her was small and mighty. Ten minutes passed and her intensity, intelligence and wicked sense of humor filled the high end bohemian showroom we were convening in.
Q. What is your full name and where did you grow up?
Mather Ravinett Martin. Born and raised in San Francisco, CA
Q. What is your job title/description and what is a typical day working for D.A. Kamala Harris?
I am the Deputy Finance Director on Kamala Harris’ campaign for California Attorney General. A typical day depends on whether Kamala is in Los Angeles or not. Due to her full-time job in San Francisco, we usually have the DA in Southern California about once every ten days. As such, I spend much of my time planning upcoming fundraisers and community outreach events, developing rapport with donors and establishing new relationships throughout Southern California. And then when the DA is here, we keep an action-packed calendar, bouncing between meetings and events for about 2 – 3 days straight.
Q. What is your favorite part of your job?
Executing big events on game day is my favorite part of the job, because of the rush I get by seeing huge crowds of new people meeting the DA, becoming inspired, and joining the ranks of our campaign. Kamala has an uncanny ability to relate personally with folks, and seeing it in action s very powerful.
Q. How did you get the job?
I was originally recruited to interview for the position by California political strategist Ace Smith, who has hired me onto his previous two campaigns – doing California field for Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign and as the manager for Yes on Measure R (LA County ballot measure). He is currently running this campaign and brought me on board to meet the DA last January 2008.
Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right, where would it be?
I have a monster craving to be in India … so I plan to be there as soon as I have a long enough break! (But of course that wouldn’t be until after the campaign.)
Q. What is your favorite thing to read?
I have certain books I like to revisit, like East of Eden, The Alchemist, Siddhartha, etc.
Q. Favorite quote?
Yvonne - "Where were you last night?"
Rick - "That's so long ago, I don't remember."
Yvonne - "Will I see you tonight?"
Rick - "I never make plans that far ahead."
