A day away from the ordinary: McConnells Mill State Park (Photos)

Activities are not limited to the linear hustle and bustle of a city’s grid. One need not be confined to its limits. A city like Pittsburgh is famous for its sports teams, and football games or hockey matches are obvious choices for entertainment, but there is more to the area than the obvious.

Many of the area’s most rewarding destinations are both cheap and accessible, yet remain undiscovered by many. McConnells Mill State Park is one such location.

One of my favorite weekends was spent in McConnells Mill. About 40 miles North of Pittsburgh, the only admission price is the gas it takes to get there. The forest’s scenery is jaw-dropping.

Rock formations sprout from the ground in a manner that makes one feel as though he or she has stepped into a prehistoric time; tree roots cling vigorously to these stones, probing the cracks for nourishment; and the trails that wind themselves through these scenes follow a creek whose pleasant rushes and gurgles can be heard throughout the park. Places like McConnells Mill don’t receive as much press as more popular destinations, but offer an experience unlike any other.

While sporting events and other activities offered within the city can certainly be enjoyable, they are familiar experiences. One should consider an adventure that takes you outside of your backyard. When seeking a travel destination, consider the road less traveled.
