Spencer Boldman doesn't have superpowers, but he's still pretty super. One of the stars of Disney XD's hit series Lab Rats, Spencer joined BFTV recently to discuss the show - which is in the middle of its second season and already renewed for a third - and its impact on his life and career.
"This second season, there's a lot of drama that happens toward the end of it, that's going to leave a lot of the fans really shocked," teased the actor, who plays bionic teen Adam Davenport. "There's still a ton of funny stuff, superpowers and that kind of thing, but the stakes are raised, definitely."
He also told us that people often get him mixed up with his character. "All the time," he said. "I think the audience wants to see you as a certain thing. There's something to be said for, they've only kind of seen me do one character. I'm a really happy person, it just is in my personality to be like that all the time, [but] I'm much calmer than my character in real life."
Lab Rats is Spencer's first TV leading role, and he's enjoyed being able to grow with Adam over two-plus seasons. "It's pretty crazy," he reflected. "Disney has been such a big part of my early career. I've done two pilots for Disney and I've beee working with them since I was 16, and I just turned 21.
"It's been really cool because you learn so much along the way," he continued. "You learn things that you can only learn obviously by doing it. You can't learn it in an acting class. You just have to go through it. Disney shows usually go about three or four seasons, so I don't know if this is our last one or not, but it's been insane how my character has grown. How he's evolved and how comfortable everyone is."
"We have such a great crew and cast," Spencer told us. "I love what our show's about and what it stands for. We're trying to genuinely figure out who [we] are as people and grow. We go through a lot of emotional stuff. We come from a mixed family. I think it just kind of touches on some things that other shows don't necessarily, and I like that."
Yet it goes without saying that he won't be on Disney XD forever. He's a talented young actor with a whole career ahead of him, so we asked him what he'd like to see in his future. "I was trained as a dramatic actor," he revealed. "I'm really excited to do some more dramatic stuff.
"I love film; I'd love to do as many films as possible. I've done a few so far, but it's been hard to schedule them with filming the show. I had a small role in 21 Jump Street before we even started filming the series. Doing any type of film like that would be a really cool thing."
Perhaps what will help Spencer the most in his career is the honest passion he has not just for whatever he might accomplish, but also the field of entertainment as a whole. "It's art to me," reflected the Texas native. "It's almost like you've giving back to many people. I've been on the receiving end of that, when you laugh or you cry or it's relatable in some way.
"When I did 21 Jump Street, I felt like I was a part of something great, but on a very large scale," he said. "Working with people that genuinely want to make good art or good work or a good film, that's what keeps me going. Because especially being young in this business, there's all this pressure. I got really good advice - I did a film this past summer [Dakota's Summer] with Keith Carradine, who's an amazing actor, and he told me 'Only worry about the art.' It meant so much to me, because you don't hear that often."
So he might not have superpowers like Adam, but that's okay. Because Spencer has a lot more going for him: he's charming, well-spoken, down to earth, and clearly loves what he does for a living, and what it can do for others. We think he's pretty awesome just being himself.
