A Conversation: William Fitzsimmons

This afternoon I had the wonderful opportunity of speaking with one of the most talented musicians I've recently had the pleasure of discovering. His name is William Fitzsimmons. He has one of the most unique stories that I've heard so far. Take a seat, get comfortable, and join the Coversation!

EX: I heard that you were a psychotherapist before becoming a musician, how did that come about?

WF: I always thought I would be helping people in offices, it actually happened by accident. I kind of just fell into it. I grew up playing music with my parents.

EX: It must've been pretty unique having parents who were both visually-impaired, how did you cope with that?

WF: I mean, at times, it was difficult growing up but, also inspiring because, my parents were  the ones who taught me how to play.

EX: "Funeral Dress" and "Everything Has Changed" are two of my favorite songs because even though they are really sad, I feel like there's some shred of hope in each of these songs. I feel like alot of people could definitely relate to your music.

WF: I sort of have this world view that everything will eventuall work out.

EX: What was the toughest song for you to write?

WF: " I Don't Feel Anymore" I was feeling awful; I really like music I can trust, that's honest.

EX: What are some of your favorite songs from albums, "Goodnight,"(2005) "Sparrow+Crow," (2008) and your latest release "Gold In The Shadow?" (2011)

WF: "You Broke My Heart", "I Don't Feel Anymore" and "Gold In The Shadow" that track is really emotional for me.

EX: Are there any special rituals that you do, during the recording process?

WF: Me and my friends delete everything off of  iPods, because, I don't want end up sounding like someone else. I really try to remind myself why I'm doing this. It's honestly, to help other people.

EX: How do you about feel about Spotify and iTunes?

WF: I think it's really a great way for people to discover new music. I think it's great. Without iTunes or Spotify, or MySpace I wouldn't be here.

EX: What's the most exciting venue you've been to?

WF: I really like going to places I've never been. We've just finished spending a week and a half in Eastern Canada. I really love it there.

EX: Do you have any musical 'guilty pleasures?'

WF: Katy Perry. She's pretty cool, and really attractive.

EX: What songs are you looking forward to performing?

WF: I like to switch stuff up, so people and I get bored playing the same stuff over. We took a chunk of everything from each album.

EX: Thank you so much William, I'll be there Sunday night!

WF: Thank you so much Monique!
