A Christmas gift for skiers – and a cause

At the Boston Ski Show last month I had a chance to meet and listen to Kurt Miller, son of Warren Miller. The two are among the pre-eminent ski film producers in the world. Kurt has a deal well worth considering for Christmas giving.

Make A Hero - restoring healthy lives

Kurt was at the show representing Make A Hero, a charitable organization that seeks to improve the lives of people with disabilities. The deal is this: For a mere $40 Kurt and Make A Hero will send you a collection of five DVDs of some of the best ski video ever produced. All of the profits from these sales will be going to support the work of Make a Hero and will help to restore the lives of people who by reason of birth defects, accident or war injury have limitations that they want and need to master.

A collection of the Best ski films ever made

The films in the collection include some of the best ski/rider footage ever filmed. Most are the work of Warren Miller, Kurt Miller and other leading ski film makers.

  • Downhill Racer: This film stars Robert Redford as a cocky young ski racer making his way into the major league of downhill racing. In the process of telling the story, the film makers have provided photography that takes the viewer right down the slope with the racers. This is an inspiring story but with photography to match.
  • Blizzard of Aahhh’s: The film by Greg Stump is one of those eye-candy films of spectacular scenery and incredible skiing. A classic, made in 1988, it features the skiing of greats such as Mike Hattrup, Glen Plake and Greg Stump at mountain top locations around the world. Watching, you’ll find yourself completely involved and ready to go.
  • Attack of La Niña: Filmed during a year when snowfall was unprecedented, this film follows a group of top-rated extreme skiers as they literally attack some of the most difficult and magnificent peaks of North America. Mark Abama, Sean Pettit, Eric Hjorleifson, Russ Henshaw and many other of the world’s best extreme skiers make these death-defying leaps and runs seem effortless. It is a gripping film that will leave you breathless.
  • The Movement: This film was made for the Make A Hero organization and is one of the most inspiring I have seen, of any genre. The directors tell the stories of the lives of several people, all afflicted by physical conditions that limit their mobility. A movie executive who lost the use of his legs, a woman born with spinal deformities that denied her the use of her legs and disabled veterans of the recent wars are among those whose stories are told. The importance of sport in returning a sense of vitality and well-being and the developing ability of the participants to perform are inspiring.
  • Fifty: Warren Miller produced ski/rider films over a period of fifty years, recording the sport throughout most of its existence as a popular sport. This film serves as somewhat of a history of the sport as film chronicles change over the years, but it does more than that. The filmmakers traveled throughout the world for more than a year studying people’s relationship to the snow and filming ski/board exploits and unbelievable action.

This package offer would make a great Christmas present a couple of ways. First, it will provide hours of exciting ski viewing to the recipient (even if you keep it yourself) and, second, it will help to provide the services of Make a Hero to a disabled – more correctly other-abled -- person and help to give them back their lives. You can order the set online on the Make A Hero website or using a telephone scan app.
