‘A Christmas Carol’ free for Amazon Kindle

A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens is rarely, if ever, out of print but it is also rarely available free of charge.

That changes on Dec. 17, Amazon.com announced Friday, when a free version of the classic becomes available for the Kindle.

Published by Simon and Schuster Digital Sales, the edition includes not only the classic story, the publisher said, but questions for discussion and historical facts about the book and its author.

The book is illustrated by the late Everett Shinn, a respected and talented cartoonist among journalists who was an illustrator for such varied publications as “Life,” “Look,” “Vanity Fair,” “Harper’s” and the old Philadelphia Press.

“Though countless editions of this classic have been published over the years,” Amazon said, “this one stands out as particularly beautiful, nostalgic, and evocative of the spirit of Christmas.”

While visiting Amazon to download “A Christmas Carol,” it may be worth your while to check out the sites top 100 free Kindle books for children.

You will find some familiar classics there, from “The Ugly Duckling” to “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” to “Little Women.”

With Kindle books becoming easier to use on a variety of computers and devices, kid-friendly books for free or reasonable prices can easily be found to match a parent’s wallet.
