A chance to impact school nutrition at SVVSD

See also

Here's some food for thought: healthy students are better students. Sure, it seems like common sense. But in recent years, studies have abounded highlighting the strong impact good nutrition has on academic performance.

St. Vrain Valley Schools are not just serious, they're passionate about providing excellent nutrition for our students. District policy is all school produce must be Colorado grown if in season. From July through the end of October, the bulk of produce served in schools is provided by Full Circle Farms, an all-organic farm in Longmont. The district also partners with numerous other local, reliable resources. Fresh, whole grain tortillas are delivered to schools on a weekly basis, still warm. Nutrition Services Director Shelley Allen eliminated soda from schools years ago. The district's own vending program meets the same guidelines as meals, including ensuring items contain 30% fat or less, no trans fats, and less than 30% sugar by weight.

All good...no, GREAT stuff. But this district doesn't simply rest on its laurels. Allen and her team, including LiveWell/SVVS School Wellness Coordinator Sarah Harter, continuously keep an eye on opportunity for progress. Now, the team has formed a Nutrition Services/Wellness Parent Focus group to get parent perspectives on school meal programs as well as wellness initiatives. They hope to meet this month. The district is also currently looking for funding for 17 salad bars for schools. Anyone interested in participating in the focus group or sponsoring a salad bar, please contact Shelly Allen, allen_shelly@svvsd.org, or Sarah Harter, harter_sarah@svvsd.org.
