The Catechism of the Catholic Church was promulgated by Pope John Paul II on June 25, 1992. The text is currently in its second edition which includes a glossary. This is one of several of the books revisions. It is, as in the words of the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, a clear norm for teaching the faith. It is rich in content. From Genesis to Revelation, the Catechism is used and useful for catechetical formation for youth, students, religious, Priests, layman; the CCC adheres to Scripture and may be effectively used by all the faithful to enhance and supplement the understanding of the faith. It is filled with moral guidance from married life to universal moral teaching on issues such as war and medical ethics.
The CCC is Scripturally based and gives a nice interpretation of The Ten Commandments. The CCC is replete with teachings of Jesus Christ. Readers will also find in this text information on what Catholics believe concerning Mary, the Mother of God.
As one of the definitive texts on Catholic and Catholic moral teaching, The CCC answers the ubiquitous question: do Catholics worship Mary? The answer is no and goes onto give an explanation of the importance of Mary in the life of the Church.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops guides the faithful into the usefulness of the Catechism by stating, Growth in the knowledge of the faith which one believes tends to deepen the quality of the faith by which one believes. Thus the Catechism can be used by the faithful as an instrument for the holistic maturation of their faith.
The Catechism is read all around the world and one of the most important printed books next to the Bible. What is truly unique is the number of languages it is printed in.
The Catechism is printed in many languages including Polish, Portuguese (see images above), Russian, French, Italian, German and Korean. There are other printed languages and many other pending translations.
