Living in the city can be expensive. Rent alone can wipe out your bank account. Being a restaurant fanatic and lover of all things food and drink, I’m always on the search for outstanding restaurants where I feel like I got my money's worth.
DC's restaurant scene is flourishing with new restaurants opening every month. But finding one that has great service, great food and drinks, and a fun atmosphere that doesn't require you to spend your entire paycheck can be hard to find.
Lucky for me there is a great little burger joint right near my apartment that has it all. Burger Tap and Shake, part of the Passion Food Group, and located on the Washington Circle in Foggy Bottom, serves up perfectly cooked burgers with all the fixin's and offers a variety of craft beers in a fun and upbeat atmosphere.
This was my first time checking out the burger joint, and I was pleasantly surprised. The menu is small, but to the point. You will find burgers, shakes, fries, shaketails (aka adult milkshakes), and a nice selection of beer.
BTS grinds a custom blend of 30-day aged, naturally raised Local Harvest beef chuck and brisket on premise everyday. Each burger is served char-griddled on a buttered toasted house-made bun. They focus on premium sourcing and in-house production in order to serve an outstanding burger at a great price.
There are two types of burgers to choose from; Signature Burgers for $8 each, which are already adorned with themed condiments, or the Our House Burger Six Buck Chuck for $6, which is just a fresh beef patty with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and Burger Tap and Shake's signature AP sauce, a blend of Mayo, Ketchup, BBQ sauce, and Chipotle.
You can also choose from a variety of toppings to add on as well for a $1 each including bacon, different types of cheeses, fried onion straws, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and so much more.
The six buck chuck, although simple, is perfect for any burger craving. It is seasoned and cooked to perfection. If you want something with a little more personality the $8 Signature Burgers include combinations with bacon and blue cheese, pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes, or even Texas chili con Carne and pickled jalopenos. And if you don't see what you want there then you can build your own combination.
For $8, the restaurant also offers a pork and veal burger, a veggie burger, and a chicken burger for those who don't care for beef.
You can't have a burger with out fries, and you definitely want to try the fries here. For $3 you get your choice of french fries, onion rings, or sweet potato fries. Served up hot and fresh with just the right amount of seasoning.
And to wash everything down, Burger Tap and Shake offers $5 wines by the glass, $6 draft beers, and $2 fountain sodas. Try a lighter style wheat beer, which is a great complement to the salty fries.
If you're still hungry after that delicious meal you can order a shake for $5 or a fun themed adult milk shake aka a shaketail for $8. For a fun affordable night out, Burger Tap & Shake can't be beat.
