A Brief History of Mortgage Rates And Where they Are Today

See also

Today mortgage rates moved into more favorable territory after reaching nearly the highest levels seen in the last year yesterday. Mortgage rates are a moving target and what is happening on Wall Street on any given day in relation to treasury and securities also affect rates. It's an often complicated and not always transparent process.

To give some historical data to put it all in perspective is a good idea. If you look at rates today, yes they are higher than a year ago, but historically, they are at an all time low.

In the year 2000 mortgage rates were on average 8%. And that was thought to be a great rate. In the 80s rates were double digits!

When looking at purchase mortgages, more options with favorable rates are available.
