A book-buying bonanza: upcoming Friends sales

See also

You may know that occasionally local Friends of the Library groups hold special book sales. I received word of two systems that will be holding sales you will not want to miss. Use this opportunity to build up your own library, while contributing to the support of your public library.

The Friends of the Ramsey County Library (my local peeps) will be hosting a Used Book Sale on April 23-27 at the Roseville Library, 2180 Hamline Ave N. Thousands of books, movies, audio books and CD from all seven branches of the RCL system will be offered, many for a dollar or less. It kicks off with a special Friends Members Only pre-sale on Wednesday, April 23 from 3 to 6 pm. Memberships can be purchased for $20 at the sale.

The sale continues for the public the evening of April 23 from 6 to 8:30 pm. Remaining sale dates for the public are: April 24 from 10 am to 8:30 pm, April 25 and 26 from 10 am to 4:30 pm, and from noon to 4:30 pm on Sunday, April 27 there is a special $3 Bag Sale. The RCL system includes libraries in Maplewood, Mounds View, New Brighton, North St. Paul, Roseville, Shoreview and White Bear Lake. The Friends group has contributed more than $2 million in funding, materials, equipment and enhancement to the libraries since 1979, according to Executive Director Sue Gehrz.

On the other side of town, the Friends groups of the Hennepin County Library system have announced a whale of a sale schedule. A couple of years ago, the groups were organized under the banner of the Hennepin County Library Foundation, which enabled them to better coordinate in terms of promotion and collections. Now all local Friends groups in the Hennepin County Library system are coordinated by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library (Friends of HCL). But there are still 41 separate Friends group in the system, as well as the main Friends of the HCL group.

Rachel Fulkerson, Communication and Program Director of the Friends of the Hennepin County Library, reminded me in a recent telephone conversation how important these Friends groups are to the overall mission of the library. She says, “Friends groups are really responsive to their local library’s needs,” adding that they rely on their used book sales for a sizable portion of their budget. In addition to the many on-site stores that Friends maintain at the library branches, they hold three or four special sales each year. The HCL groups raise “anywhere from two thousand to ten thousand dollars a year on the strength of these sales,” says Rachel.

Friends groups help with programming, collections and other areas of their respective branches, depending on what is most needed by that location. Anyone can join a Friends group, too – you don’t have to be a librarian or work in the publishing industry. Joining a Friends group is a great way to get involved in your local library.

How can you get started? Try going to one of these upcoming sales. There’s sure to be one near you, and you will no doubt meet up with some of the local Friends members there. Just let them know you’re interested, and they will tell you how to proceed. Membership is generally very affordable, and often includes perks like members-only meetings with special guest speakers, special sale previews, and more.

If you’ve got a hankering to build your library at home with some great bargains, you should definitely check this out. Also note that other area Friends groups hold sales in the fall, such as the Friends of the Ramsey County Suburban Libraries, which has another big sale coming at the Roseville branch, usually in October.

Meanwhile, they’ve got your book habit covered. Check the sale schedule listed above and below, and get over there for some great bargains! Each sale features hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. Most books are priced at $1 or less. Mark your calendar for a sale near you.

NOTES:

Members only = Local Friends members are invited to a preview sale. New members are welcome to join at the door. Members for all Hennepin County Library groups are invited to attend, unless otherwise noted.

Bag sale = All the items you can fit into a grocery bag for $5, or as noted.

Note that these are arranged alphabetically by location, not by sale date.
