During a fantastic bus tour from New Jersey to Michigan, we started our day with a good breakfast and then boarded our bus to head to the island. Soon we arrived at the dock, ready to board the ferry to the island where there are no motorized vehicles; just bicycles and horses. We took a carriage tour with an adorable driver named Katie who had two dark brown horses named Sadie and Sarge. She gave us a great tour of the island and took us to the top of the island where we departed for a rest and some shopping.
This was where we took a three horse carriage for the rest of the tour catching a glimpse of the magnificent Grand Hotel. We were brought to Fort Mackinac which was enjoyable, but it was a blustery day in early June and we wanted shelter and coffee. Rather than wait for a carriage ride we opted to walk down a trail that led to the middle of town. There we found a pub that served delicious soup and coffee. We shopped some more; lingering to stay as warm as possible until we found a pizzeria. We still had plenty of time so we ordered a pizza and just hung out till almost time to catch the ferry back.
But no trip to Mackinac Island is complete unless we stopped at Ryba's Fudge Shop; what locals consider to be the best fudge. Back on the ferry and then the bus to the hotel. Freshen up for dinner and back on bus to the Lighthouse Restaurant in Mackinaw City. It was a nice sit down dinner; I had broiled whitefish, my hubby had herbed chicken and our friends both had smoked pork chop all served with a great salad, baked potato and delicious vegetables and a creamy dessert. Back to the hotel to rest for another busy day tomorrow.
