A Blossoming wine experience: The Chloe Wine Collection

At a recent wine tasting, Leslie Unger, wine consultant for International Vinters, was offering Circus Wine customers samples of what she referred to as “The Chloe Collection."
As she was pouring wines, Ms. Unger explained that the collection's name came from the ancient word for “blooming” or "blossoming", because the winemaker felt that these wines are radiant and burgeoning with beautiful aromas and luxurious flavors. "Perfect for creating memorable moments with its distinctively classic black and white label because", according to Unger, “the wine was produced to elevate an ordinary moment into a memorable occasion.”
Mis Unger explained to the interested wine tasters that these wines are handcrafted by winemaker Georgetta Dane, who was born and raised in Romania. Georgetta earned her master’s degree in food science at Galati University. In 1998, her husband applied for a U.S. visa on a whim, and eight months later – on the day of their daughter’s baptism – the family received green cards. Despite having careers, a newborn and a home under construction, Georgetta and her husband risked all and emigrated to the U.S. Georgetta landed in Monterey, California, where she worked as a lab technician with Kendall Jackson. As her English improved, she showcased her enological knowledge and quickly advanced. In 2004, she joined The Wine Group and three years later took the helm of her own brand.
Today, Georgetta marries her old world European roots with contemporary American life to craft the Chloe Wine Collection for sophisticated yet modern wine lovers. Grapes for these wines are sourced from prized vineyards across the world’s preeminent growing regions to craft this collection’s three distinctive wines – Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Red No. 249.
Customers at Red Bank’s Circus Wines were impressed by the her history as well as the wines. At an incredibly affordable pricepoint, these wines offer the structure and depth to be considered an elegantly intense and sophisticated threesome.
The first wine of the tasting was the Chloe Pinot Grigio, 2013 from the cool Northern Italian Valdadige D.O.C. This white is a classic expression of this timeless varietal. Alluring aromatics lead into an intense expression of juicy white peach, soft melon, crisp apple and floral honeysuckle with a subtle undertone of Meyer lemon. This bright, classic Pinot Grigio is fermented in 100% stainless steel and offers of aa generously structured mouth feel and mildly lingering finish.
Chloe Sonoma County Chardonnay, 2012 is crafted from grapes grown primarily in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Ms. Unger explained that winemaker Georgetta Dane highlighted the structure and depth of this wine by using both new and used oak as a secondary presence, rather than the focus. This method showcases the wine’s ripe, clean flavors of fresh citrus, apple, pear with notes of creamy butter and a hint of vanilla. The opulent, rich flavors meld with soft oak integration because of the combination of stainless steel and oak fermentation. The wine is exceptionally well-balanced with sophisticated intensity, a creamy mid-palate and long finish. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged on oak, resulting in an elegant California Chardonnay with a silky finish.
Named after the 249 wine lots that winemaker Georgetta Dane tasted to achieve Chloe 2012 Red No. 249, this sophisticated affordable red from California’s North Coast is an elegant, rich and complex blend. An enticing nose precedes deep layers of expressive, dark fruit flavors blended with notes of rich espresso and spice on the palate. Soft, integrated tannins and structure imparted from new and used French and American oak give this wine a full, luxurious mouth feel and an alluring and lingering finish.
Line priced at $18.99 each the wines will make a welcome addition to any table or glass. As Ms Unger said, “This wine was made to enable sophisticated consumers to create timeless memories during special occasions and capture beautiful moments in the every day.”
