A Blast of Bitter Cold!

As much as I enjoy stormy weather, after three days of cloudy skies I love seeing the bright sunshine, especially when I know that stormy weather is coming again soon. Our normal high is 39 degrees today and that’s where will end up this afternoon with increasing southerly winds.

While we’re enjoying the sunshine, clouds and snow have spread into Wisconsin and Michigan as a bitter cold air mass slides south from Canada in concert with a low pressure system heading into western Wisconsin.

As that low pressure gets stronger we’ll have increasing winds on Saturday and a quick shot of milder air…but before you plan your picnic I should let you know that it won’t feel as warm as the reading on the thermometer. The northern storm will create south to southwest winds at 15 to 30 mph tomorrow, so highs in the upper 40s will feel more like the 30s.

The storm will move east by Saturday night with a strong cold front heading into the Ohio Valley, quickly ending our little warm-up. Winds will shift to the west with temperatures on Sunday afternoon more than 20 degrees colder than tomorrow. Highs will be in the mid to upper 20s with wind chills in the teens all day…but that’s just the initial push o cold air.

A second push of cold arrives on Monday and we’ll start the day in the teens with highs only near 20, and wind chills in the single digits and low teens most of the day. A third push arrives by early Tuesday and it will be the coldest. Lows Tuesday morning will be in the single digits with wind chills below zero, and highs will likely hold to the mid teens Tuesday afternoon! We’ll see some improvement on Wednesday with lows from 9-12 degrees and afternoon highs in the upper 20s…still cold and well below normal, but better than Tuesday.

After the cold it appears that a rather stormy pattern is setting up, and it may bring snowy weather back to the region for the final week of the month and continuing into early February. I would enjoy seeing a lot more snow....but I know that not all of you would agree. For those who don't like the cold and snow I would suggest a 40-day trip to Florida so you can come back at the start of spring (March 1)...or at least stay there until you hear what Punxsutawney Phil has to say on February 2nd.

Keep your eyes on the sky and enjoy the changing weather!
