I came across a group of guys some time ago that were doing what they called a 555 Ride. And since I learned about this type of adventure, I’ve wanted to embark on my own 555!
The “rules” are simple:
1) The bike must be a 1975 vintage or older
2) Can only spend $500 TOTAL on the bike and any necessary/desired modifications to get the bike ready
3) The bike must be 500cc’s or smaller
4) No interstates
5) No windshields
I’m sure there are plenty of other masochists out there, like myself, that are ready to go! But what entices us about this trip of (possible or certain, not sure which one yet!) heartache, frustration, fun, excitement, and who-knows what else! When talking to some friends and family about it, and hopefully enlisting another adventuresome fool, it is actually easy to see. In fact, it’s that part of every bikers DNA that sets us apart. It’s not about the bike we ride or the miles we see. It’s not about the destination, or even the origin for that matter. It’s all about the journey! Just like in life, there will be some potholes we hit, detours along the way, and the inevitable breakdown. But there will also be blue skies and sunshine, wide open road, and that feeling of the wind on your face! I’ve not made my own 555 as of yet, nor have I roped someone else into joining me on my first 555, but I have purchased a bike that I’m hoping will make the journey. One down, two to go. Remember to look for the best down every road, roll that throttle back, and enjoy the ride!
