The Lock Haven University Lady Eagles (Bald Eagles) hosted the Virginia Commonwealth University Lady Rams today at Charlotte E. Smith Field in an Atlantic-10 field hockey game. Each team was 2-1 in Atlantic-10 conference games this year going into this game: VCU was 8-7 overall coming in while LHU was 12-4.
October 25, 2013: Charlotte E. Smith Field, Lock Haven, Pa.
The Lock Haven University Lady Eagles dominated the stats in this game: they took 18 shots to VCU's 10. They had 14 shots on goal to VCU's 6. VCU's goal keeper recorded 11 saves to LHU's 6 saves. I watched the game and by casually observing the game it occurred to me one might have thought the Lady Rams were in fact wining the game because they had the ball in LHU's defensive zone so often. The ball possession wasn't, however, translating into shots.
Lock Haven's Nakira Downes had two assists in the game and her blazing speed left VCU futilely trying to cut her off as she made several near end-to-end runs with the ball where she went through and by VCU defenders with some slick stick work enabling her safe passage.
Lock Haven's offense was initiated by fast runs into the VCU defensive zone and not much deliberate play-making in the VCU defensive zone. The Lady Eagles got 11 penalty corners to keep VCU's goalie Megan Botteri busy all afternoon. LHU's goalie Elaina White recorded her third straight A-10 Conference shutout today with the 6 saves she made.
