Another kick to the ribs for 99ers.
In the early morning hours on Thursday Rep. Barbara Lee’s amendment on the Fiscal Year 2011 Continuing Budget Resolution fell due to a rules violation. Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT) voiced his concern citing the following rule during debate:
Amendments…”May not legislate or authorize new or existing programs or otherwise make changes in existing law (clause 2(c) of rule XXI);
The explanation continues,
“Any amendment that violates any one of these rules is subject to a point of order against its consideration.”
Rep. Lee quickly took to the floor voicing her outrage, calling the chairs easy acceptance of the objection which squashed the amendment, a “shame and (a) disgrace”.
Rep. Lee’s 14 week unemployment extension (H.R. 589) has 67 co sponsors and will likely have to fight to reach the floor as a stand alone bill now. Rep. Lee has indicated that she is willing to offset the $16 billion dollar cost of the extension. A willingness that will now prove vital as Rep. Lee courts GOP co-sponsors and support.

Of course this happened. Bring out any manuevers to detour the passing of the bill. Look people right there it shows that some aren't willing to help others. Kinda reminds me of a being in court. Help the people, don't contribute to the downward spiral. Please stop finding ways or reasons to provide the additional assistance. These tactis are being employed in the private sector as well as employers and recruiters have excuses and reasons not to hire us these days which has us in this 99er situation. Don't you care about your fellow Americans you have a responsibility to uphold. Either you step up to the plate and do the right thing or the entire country will FAIL.
The country will not fail! There are a lot of successful people that will see that it doesn't. Stop the whine and quit projecting your frustration and failures onto others, its unfortunate that you are in the position you are, but we're moving forward. Life does not revolve around your miserable existence and the sooner you get this, the sooner you can start being successful.
a99er,
Wow! Following the rules is a "manuever to detour the passing" of the bill???? What exactly do you mean by that??
The "bill" is going to pass, just without the 99 week extension.
99ers should stop trying to find ways or reasons to get more free money from the government.
Millions of children will go hungry because of this. How's that for a technicality...
Millions of children will not go hungry because of this.
HOW DARE you say that we have a miserable existence...Your freedoms that you enjoy, the success you enjoy are because of my family and families like mine....My father fought in wars, my fathers father fought the war and my husband fought the war...HOW dare the greed that has become your miserable existence of a human being make you seem you are more deserving than others....I wonder when these people have had enough they come take back what was stolen from them how you will feel then....
And your family was the only one that did this? I'm sure my family and myself were more sucessful and still are. Stop playing the victim...it will get you nowhere.
99noway.....I hope you loose your job, and ALL your money. Dont forget, KARMA WILL now somehow bite you back for your heatless comments. When you loose something close to you soon, think back to this article for a little reflection when you ask "why me?!"
I get told that all the time...won't happen. I don't have a plan to fail and I don't fail to plan.
does any one think this bill will be passed to help the 99ers
One word: HA
Nope.
Here is a copy of the email I sent to Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT) Hit his website hard to let him know how we feel.
Mr.Rehberg and fellow Republicans, Thanks for nothing! You have no idea how hard some of us are struggling just to live. 14 weeks of further unemployment would have at least kept a roof over my families heads. I look for work every day and am going through a background check for a job in another state so you can't say that I'm lazy! I am a registered Republican and you should thank god that I don't live in your district because I would start a campaign to oust you or vote you out in the next election. Only by fate are you and your family not in the same position as millions of us hard working Americans are in. Wayne D.
Yeah "99noWay" its obvious you are a troll and are talking out of your ass because you can remain anonymous...Please why dont you reveal your true identity if you really are so successful. Are you afraid? No truly successful person has the time to go on unemployment articles to troll. Everyone knows your full of it and are also unemployed. Have fun wasting the rest of the morning posting comments sounds like a really wonderful life..lol loser.
99noWay is just a welfare king who is afraid that his benifits will be taken away....His free housing that his knocked up girlfriend got for him is all he has...And he likes thinking he is living like a king when really he is just a looser going no where.
Don't worry. according to the President and all the jerks in Congress, thinggs are much better. besides they can always blame Bush, like they do for everything.
99ers ... the new lifestyle choice.
LOL deadbeat like me??? You dont even know me youre just making assumptions. Although I am unemployed i am very comfortable and dont need to troll to make a living. Youre a loser and you know it. "Doing My Job" LOLOLOL What a great contyribution to society. Trolling on websites. Wow you really must be successful to be getting paid to troll. The real reason you wont give up your true identity is because you are either a coward or a liar,. You wouldnt have the guts to spew your ignorance in person so you do it online.
I don't advocate for the govt to take care of me. Thats what deadbeats and deadbeat sympathizers do. Relying on the govt to support you will get you nowhere. Just look what its doing to these people right now.
amen to that!
Hmm so i guess that makes your rickety old incestual grandparents deadbeats as they collect social security a goverment funded HANDOUT....waity you say theyve paid into it their whole lives???? well guess what douche the same goes for unemployment. yOU ARE PATHETIC AND IF YOU HAD ANY GUTS YOUD SPEW THIS NONSENSE IN PERSON NOT ONLINE. COWARDS
You didn't pay into that fund creep. The last extensions were borrowed money, not from a fund that was created by any extra ue money. You can never win by begging the govt to keep paying you to do nothing. Freeloaders have lost out again. 2 years of free money is long enough to get it together, unless you don't want to. Sounds like there is a lot of those types.
Yep, if you can't say anything intelligent, start yelling and calling people names.
Full Of it said: Hmm so i guess that makes your rickety old incestual grandparents deadbeats ...
Wow, a stupid statement if ever there was one. But apparently, he hates old people ..
In most states EMPLOYERS pay into unemployment, not you. And that is only for a 26 week payout.
I thought you just said you were "comfortable"? Why are you then getting mad and calling people names?
ronron,
What day did you say your party was?
I so sick and tired of your comments. If you don't like what's on this foram, then why are you posting? It is a 99ers foram, ya know! Why don't go post, or better yet start your own website for 99 bashers. You evidently don't have a clue to what your talking about. you are so stupid!
lynn ... it's f o r u m .. and it is a public forum, where anyone is free to post.
Still having it...and yes, you're still invited
This isn't a "forum" for 99ers. This is an acticle about a bill to extend unemployment for 99ers that was trying to get added on to another bill. It did not work.
I know exactly what i'm talking about. There is not going to be an extension to give more than 99 weeks, almost two years of unemployment.
You can say anything you want, whine about it until your face turns blue. It's not going to change anything.
I'm not the stupid one.
Time to move on and do something about getting yourself a job.
People are looking for work and fighting for survival. If you had no job, no benefits, and no response for every application you were putting out there, (even to McDonalds, Wal Mart) what would you do? Wouldn't you speak up and ask for help so you and your family could avoid homelessness and hunger?
Politics aside, its tough out there and 99ers are just trying to stay alive. And I truly don't see why anyone should be against that.
It can happen to anyone, try a little empathy.
What happened to compassionate conservatism?
Jason,
Of course I would be asking for some kind of help. I'm not against anybody trying to stay alive. There are some resources out there for help and nobody is going to go hungry.
If I wasn't working for two years I would not be "demanding" more free bi-weekly checks from the government after getting them for almost two years.
Since you have access to the media, why can't you do something like get people who want to, to donate or raise money for 99ers?
It is tough out there and everybody is trying to stay alive.
Paying people to not work indefinitely is not compassion.
The resources that I've heard about are extremely limited. If you're aware of a host of resources please, please take the time to post them in this space. I will do my ready best to publicize anything that will help 99ers.
As for setting up a way to solicit donations, there are places that do that. But again, resources are extremely limited and it is hard to get a large number of people the resources they need to exist.
We have a different definition of compassion. I think an extension is more than appropriate in light of the circumstances that lead to this downturn and the current climate of stagnant growth.
Beyond reasons of compassion or whatever you want to call it, an extension makes economic sense.
16 billion dollars in the pockets of the long term unemployed will quickly move to the pockets of struggling American businesses which will lead to jobs.
And that is the ultimate goal.
Jason,
The government already put almost 100 billion dollars into the hands of the unemployed. And that did nothing to stimulate the economy or add to job creation. Why would you think 16 billion more dollars given to the unemployed will achieve that goal?
So basically you demand that 100 billion to turn things around entirely in order for you to consider it a success. Well we gave a hell of a lot more money to the war in Iraq, in Afghanistan, to the richest few, and the banks.
Where is the bang for our buck there? Where is the absolute success.
People far smarter and accomplished then I imagine you are, and I know I am have stated that every dollar you put into the hands of the unemployed gets poured right back into the GDP. This economy moves when people spend money, not hoard it for a rainy day.
No one is more likely to pour every penny they have into this economy right now then the long term unemployed and the 99ers.
I'll take the incremental improvement that will bring over whatever it is doing nothing is doing.
Numbers are numbers and its just plain logic that if you give people money to spend...and lets not EVER forget that 99ers paid taxes while they worked, while they received benefits, so if you give them THEIR tax dollars they are going to spend it and help the economy.
Jason,
Don'y intertwine national security with unemployment benefits, it does nothing to further your cause for 99ers.
You can convey your opinion, just like I can but in the end, when all is said and done, 99 weeks of unemployment is all that is going to happen.
You have your point of view and I have mine. We will not change each others minds.
Isn't America the best country in the world to live in!!!! In some other countries, we could be imprisoned or shot for stating our opinions!
I'll intertwine national defense and our economy all I like.
You say the money spent on UI hasnt fixed the problem, well the money spent in Afghanistan sure hasn't fixed the problem .
But do we stop the war?
You talk about our national security, how about our national conscience, our national responsibilities. How about the damage that will be done to this countries standing in the world, the cancer that grows on every street corner as homelessness, starvation, and crime grow and grow.
I'm still waiting for you to share info on the resources you spoke about.
Instead you've told me how to prove my point because what I say is inconvenient to your perceived logic.
You tell me we all are entitled to our own opinion, that no minds are being changed. I am aware of this.
And then you wave a flag and ask me to be patriotic at a time when my countrymen, and your countrymen are being pushed into the gutter like street refuse.
I love this country, I love what you can accomplish here, and I love its people, but sometimes I don't recognize this country, and I can't see or find its humanity, or its common sense.
99isenough why are you here? I think congress is much of a joke right now. The should have helped the 99ers. Also the unemployment payout isn't no longer 2 yrs. You can go back as far as 5 yrs now. They changed that law on Jan 1, 2011. Go look that up, so at this point 99ers have a right to an extension just like other unemployed workers had this past Dec. From what I heard. Creating 36K jobs on the last jobs report is very sad and there is over 5 million unemployed. Anyone that can do calculation could get 5million into 36K job. Can you? I ask you what would you (or anyone that doesn't believe in an extension like this one) do if you didn't have the job you have now (if your not self employed)? Next question, then why haven't you completed that next chapter in your life? I say leave the 99er extension conversation to those 99ers and move on to become more successful in other areas of your life. Then again find some 99er to switch places with for a while and see if you still agree with the actions of congress.
You can get unemployment for up to 99 weeks, almost two years. You cannot get unemployment for 5 years, you look that one up.
If you could get unemployment for 5 years 99ers wouldn't be whining now.
99ers DO NOT have a "right" to an extension.
"IF" is a big word. I am not worried what I would do "IF" I didn't have a job. What would you do "IF" you had a job now?
Why aren't YOU moving on to the next chapter in your life?
Why would I need to switch places with a 99er?
99erisenough,
If you have nothing there is no next chapter, just a conclusion.
Jason,
If you have nothing, that is all the more of a reason to start a new chapter.
You can't will better circumstances into existence. These people are about to lose their homes. Ive spoken with a women, a women trying her damnedest to survive and help others who may have to surrender her children to foster care if she loses her home because she doesn't want them to live on the street.
Is she just not wishing hard enough for that fresh start, what is it exactly that someone in that position should be doing? Shes applied for the lowest paying jobs she can fine, there is no standard anymore, there is no saying no.
Desperation has taken hold and people who went to college, spent a decade, or two, or three working have nothing and they'll take anything.
What are they supposed to do, what can they do when every answer is no? As far as I see it the answers are pretty grim.
There are no bootstraps to pull, no fairytale next chapter. Just a slide into the gutter, and nobody comes back from that.
What I'm wondering why would she face an uphill battle to bring the unemployment bill to the house floor as a standalone? Heck she had to know about that rule. It's just silly to think LEE didn't know about this rule. She is playing her little games as well. From what I've heard from the REPUBLICAN is that a bill MUST BE PAID FOR so there is not addition to the debt and no EARMARKS. It's all PUBLIC it's not hard to GOOGLE the demands of the Republicans last year. They have said to have found the money for this extension. Monies that were found last Nov. and wasn't used for the last extension (Dec 2010). Actually a REPBULICAN found the monies last Nov. 2010 that wasn't used, so from my understanding they were to be looking to that for funds. So where is the problem for a REPUBLICAN to sign onto this bill? I do know DEMS and REPS go back on their word all the time. But this is what the REPUBLICANs used to get in office and if they don't push this through. They will be viewed as liars by many. HA probably got in office and wanted to buy bigger homes and found out about that money. So the heck with those that got us in here. I don't know.....but I'm not spend loads of time on the trust of Congress. All in all they should pass this on the house floor.
That was LAST YEARS Congress who said they would have no problem if it was paid for.
This is a new Congress now and they are trying to CUT the budget.
There is no money to fund this bill anywhere, they are making cuts everywhere.
@jason
Don't bother trying to reason with 99isenough. He's an idiot.
99isenough works for the Obama Administration! Don't waste your breath.
Interesting the Senate refused to take money in over payments from the U.N. $53 million worth but insists they need to cut the debt. Now this bill needed 16 million to be paid for in order to be passed. Double talking politicians sums up a good look at politics as usual.
Why change now its been this way for over a hundred years and it has no political side. DEMS And REP are equally at fault.
It is obvious that "99 is enough" and others that exert so much energy posting their negative comments must NOT work either, because they seem to have plenty of time on their hands to post comments after every article written EVERYDAY on this and other blogs. Forget about getting a job, how about you guys GETTING A LIFE! Try leaving the house once in a while and finding a girlfriend or even a friend if you are lucky. Clearly you wake up everyday to post because of your worthless life and have nothing else to do with yourselves. That's pretty pathetic.
Anonymous,
It doesn't take any energy to post my realistic comments here.
I have a very nice life, thank you so much for your concern.
I like to post here because 99ers can't seem to come to terms with the fact that almost two years of unemployment is all you're going to get.
I'm out and about all day, have you ever heard of the "mobile web"? Well, it's,,,,, aw,,,,, forget about it.
You should exert some of your energy into getting a job, any job instead of sitting behind your computer all day long.
Ignore the idjits.
Bottom line: The bill was both a bill and an amendment. Amendment failed procedurally. Why'd she do it? It was done before, and no one objected. But of course this time, a Republicon objected. So it now is only option 2--standalone bill, still in Way and Means, not going anywhere, lots of cosponsors (all Dems). Focus on the R reps that sit on the committee. It needs SHOVED out of that committee to ever make its way onto the House floor for debate. Google is an amazing thing--search House Ways and Means Committee. The names will come up. Contact the Republicons who want the bill to die its death in committee. Call your reps--both D and R--demand that they cosponsor this bill if they have not (and no R has). The only thing they can do is say yes or no.
Keep contacting. Keep moving forward.
And again, ignore the idjits. :-)
