94 percent of shooters in Chicago get off free

According to new statistics by DNAinfo, 94 percent of gunmen who shot and injured their victims got away with no charges whatsoever.

The staggering number is a complete travesty for Chicagoans who have been victimized by gun violence for decades. The gang culture is largely to blame for the high crime rates.

The numbers are based on 2012 data, which show an increase of almost 3% from the previous year. The inner city crime doesn't seem to have an end in sight as the new year has already brought 31 murders.

The lack of information and the entrenched gang culture have frustrated Chicago law enforcement. The shootings mostly come just after midnight and police are unable to find witnesses. The lack of prosecutorial evidence has plagued the city. The gunmen are largely never found, and thus the violence continues.

Mayor Emanuel's stalled gun control initiatives are perhaps more needed than ever.
