911 calls released about I-880 drifting sideshow on Oakland Freeway

911 calls have been released earlier today (January 30) in partnership with Mercury News highlighting the fiasco which surrounded 3 cars who stopped traffic on a northbound freeway in Oakland to do donuts. Shortly after, videos popped up on facebook and youtube showcasing their stunts and providing enough video evidence for police to further help them prosecute the hooligans. In addition to eyewitness accounts, numerous people phoned 911 to inform police of what was going on.

Listening to the 18 plus minutes of most of the 911 calls received, you get a real sense of the lives that these so called “drifters” affected that particular day. There’s a type of driving fun that you do out on a deserted road in the middle of nowhere to avoid police and not cause any trouble and then there is the senseless fun that causes headache and undue stress to innocent people trying to get through their day.

It’s cliche to say, but our actions affect others in both good and bad ways in a ripple effect that is almost impossible to map.And on that particular day, lots of stones were thrown out onto that proverbial "pool of life" that disrupted alot of lives in a negative way.

For someone it might’ve been 10 minutes late to work or for another it might have been showing up late to a job interview. For whatever reason, we should think about who we’re affecting before we decide to have a little fun.

Finally, it’s encouraged by the CHP and local authorities to call 911 if you do witness road rage or hooligan type driving that can affect others in a bad way. Be sure to remember the license plate and the make, model and color of the vehicle/s in the act.
