91 freeway in Corona reopened after fatal officer-involved shooting

Police Wednesday continued to investigate a confrontation in which law enforcement officers shot and killed a man with a gun on the 91 Freeway in Corona, close to the 15 interchange.

Details from The Corona Police Department’s press information page were unavailable.

The officer-involved shooting occurred on the eastbound 91 Freeway just west of Interstate 15 around 8 p.m. Tuesday, said CHP Officer Mario Lopez. Corona Police and The California Highway Patrol were on scene

“There was a traffic collision that occurred at that location about 7:47 p.m.,” Lopez said. “A Corona fire unit was first on the scene and they were confronted by a man outside a vehicle holding a gun.”

The Corona paramedics contacted the CHP and Corona police and asked for assistance, Lopez said.

“The officers ordered the man to drop his weapon but he refused and, fearing for their lives, the officers opened fire, striking the man,” Lopez said, adding both CHP and Corona police officers fired weapons.

“Medical aid was rendered to the suspect, but he died at the scene. I don’t know yet who fired the fatal rounds, how many shots were fired, or whether it was a CHP officer or Corona officer who killed the man,” Lopez said.

Lopez said he did not know why the gunman brandished a weapon.

Neither the firefighters nor the officers were hurt.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the Riverside Freeway were shut down after the incident. The CHP reopened lanes in both directions on Wednesday morning.

Corona resident Alex Pilat said he saw numerous emergency vehicles on the freeway from his position on Main St. in Corona.
