90th minute penalty kick miss keeps Tacoma Tide FC from grabbing a point in Portland

The leading scorer in Tacoma Tide FC history couldn't add to his total, and the boys in yellow from the City of Destiny fell for the second time in four days today in Portland Oregon.

Rory Agu had a penalty kick try deep into stoppage time but sailed it over the crossbar and the Portland Timbers U23's ended up winning a tight 1:0 match before a record U23's crowd of 2,247 at PGE Park on a Tuesday 11:00 AM match that was a special Health and Fitness Soccer School Day event.

Tacoma had recently lost 3:0 at Kitsap on Saturday.

The match has ramifications on the race for the Northwest Division US Open Cup spot. Portland remains alive in the chase while Tacoma is out. The Timbers U23's play at Yakima and at Spokane this weekend. They need to win both of those matches and then hope that the Kitsap Pumas lose or draw in Bremerton on Saturday night against Seattle's Washington Crossfire. See more about this, and how goal differential plays into it, in the comments section below this post.

according to the US Open Cup site, the max goal differential a team can earn per game is +3. So if Portland wins both and gets the max goal diff in the next 2 games with +6 and with their +3 already is a max possible total goal diff of +9. The Pumas already have +9 in the 3 qualifying matches.

Thanks for figuring that out, Chris. In other words, if the Pumas win, they are in. I will adjust the story.

Yes, Pumas control their own destiny. A Spokane or Yakima victory or draw vs Timbers this week would be fantastic as well.
