Syracuse basketball Coach Jim Boeheim tied retired coach Bob Knight today on the all-time wins list with his teams win today. The man has won 902 games (and counting) with only Duke’s Coach K ahead of him (and one more year of coaching). Add in one little fact; every single one of his wins has been at one school. Unparalleled and as Coach K said, won’t ever be done again.
As he said in his post-game TV interview on ESPNU when asked about stepping on-campus 50 years ago on the day he said ‘and I almost left the next day.’ Some get all worked up by JB, I think he’s funny as hell as he pokes fun at a lot of things, himself and the press with that dry sense of humor.
We get to be led into the ACC waters next year by one of the giants in the game and what more could anyone ask? First up, in just two days, is the predator filled pond that is the Big East and this season will be a war every game, as it always has been. But, enjoy this last Big East ride fans, enjoy seeing Georgetown, UConn, Rutgers (that hurt to say), St. John’s, Villanova etal. One last time together and especially soak in the last great Big East Tournament. A basketball league that excelled, grew, and ultimately killed itself as an all-sports whatever it is becoming will die on that last day.
For now let’s congratulate Jim Boeheim on his ever-growing list of ‘Wow!’ accomplishments. He is consistently great. Well done Coach, well done!
