Despite a cold front coming through the Rockford Metro area during the morning hours of Wednesday with low clouds and northeast winds, temperatures still made it up to 88 degrees yesterday, but some 6 degrees cooler than Tuesday’s 94. Temperatures south and west of the front that stalled south of I-80 reached the mid to upper 90s!
With a humid air mass still in place, temperatures in the low 70s this morning coupled with dew points near 70, allowed fog, very dense in some areas to form over much of northern and central Illinois. With clear skies above the fog, the sun slowly burned off the fog by the late morning hours.
As skies clear, the sun should heat up the region into the upper 80s today. With high humidity still in place, heat indices will reach into the 90s. An impulse will ride along the edge of the hot air dome, centered off to our south and west and drag a warm front through our area during the overnight hours and early Friday morning. Depending on the timing of the thunderstorms and how extensive cloud cover is, temperatures on Friday could soar will into the 90s and with humid air still in place heat index values should reach or exceed 100 degrees through the area during the peak heating times of the afternoon hours. Stay tuned as the National Weather Service in Chicago might hoist Heat Advisories.
Being so close to the front, chances of thunderstorms will exist during the afternoon hours on Friday and ending very late. Saturday looks to start cloudy with showers ending. Temperatures should reach the mid to upper 80s on Saturday, depending on cloud cover and chances of storms. Sunday looks to be a carbon copy of Saturday, but as a cold front pushes through late Sunday, strong storms may push through the region and usher in near normal temperatures and lower humidity, ending our late season heat wave that has dominated our weather over the past several days.
