In this posting we travel to the Russian River region - an area almost exactly ninety minutes away by car from Vallejo. In ambiance and pace, it is a location that hearkens back to the Sierra foothills of the sixties and early seventies - before the explosive growth of housing and commercial development dramatically altered its look and feel.

The Russian River of the 1920s was a very different place also: The sounds of logging could be heard through the Valley as well as the roar of the railroad that supported the logging and mining industries. The railroad would eventually bring vacationers to stay among the redwoods in arguably one of the most spectacular settings on the Sonoma Coast.

The railroad is long gone. Still this region offers the same spectacular wildlife setting with the addition of a sizeable winemaking community whose boutique wineries dot the Russian River AVA- an area that stretches over 150 square miles. Should you want to vacation by the River, there are many Russian River home owners who are willing to share their properties.

Russian River Getaways, located in Guerneville, provides access to these homes in the area that includes the towns of: Forestville, Guerneville, Monte Rio, Cazedero, Monte Rio and Jenner. Wanting to experience the River for a couple of days in March, we found that their website's robust search engine helped us zero in on dog-friendly accommodations that fronted on the River. With Getaways agent Mike Lezer's help, we located a few cottages with features that matched our wish list. Narrowing down this list we eventually chose the Cabernet Cottage, a river-front dog-friendly home set deep in the forest, yet only minutes away from 'downtown' Guerneville.

We were pleased to discover that all the details about this accommodation (so carefully documented in text as well as images at the website) matched our experience: a well-stocked and maintained property that includes such amenities as flat-screen LCD television, wireless Internet access, inside and outside dining areas, laundry facilities and two single kayaks. The website also includes third-party authenticated feedback and from the checkered input it is clear that the feedback is not censored. Visit our extensive slide show in order to get an illustrated sense of the property.

Most properties operate with seasonal variations, such as minimum stay (one-week during the summer vs. 2 days during the winter), rental fees that include cleaning and damage waivers and have maximum occupancy limitations.
