9-year-old who shot teen released to parent, may face juvenile charges

A 9-year-old boy who shot and wounded a neighborhood teen Saturday was released to a parent while authorities consult with the juvenile court regarding possible charges.

The shooting occurred at about 6:30 PM Saturday evening near Gratiot and East Outer Dr on the city’s east side.

The victim, 15, was walking down Kilbourne St that evening when he observed the 9-year-old sitting on the porch of a home in the 12800 block of that street.

Then the young suspect fired a shot, striking the teen.

The victim was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced in temporary serious condition. He has since been released.

A 16-year-old was babysitting the suspect at the time of the shooting.

It is not clear how the boy got the gun or why he fired the shot. It does not appear that the suspect knew the victim.

The suspect was initially taken into police custody. According to DPD spokesperson Sgt Eren Stephens, the boy was turned over to his mother, who is cooperating with the police.
